Singers’ Vocal Performance Workshop

techniques at the Women in Jazz Singers’ Vocal Performance Workshop

 

 

Who Should Attend?

If you have a passion for singing and desire to sing in front of others, either in a private setting, at school, at church or as an idol, this workshop is for you! Men and women, boys and girl are welcome. Come prepared to sing and have a great time. Or just come to observe, take in the lessons and support the other singers.

Mandy Gaines: Professional International Vocalist

Pamela Hart: Professional Vocalist and Producer of Women in Jazz

Thomas Hughes: Professional Vocalist, Music Director, and Composer

Workshop Topics

  • Know the Musicians’ Code - Pamela Hart & Thomas Hughes

How to speak musicians’ language and slang, hand motions and body language to communicate before, during, or at the end of a song. This is especially important to the jazz singer, who often sings with musicians unrehearsed! Involves participant singing.

  • Performance Techniques - Pamela Hart

Stage presence, finding your vocal range, learning the structure of a song, finding your key to a song, microphone techniques, phrasing, and structuring a singing set. Involves participant coaching and singing.

 

 

 

 

  • Recognizing Changes - Thomas Hughes

A must for any singer who wants to become a professional, Thomas Hughes demonstrates the different sounds of jazz chords and how singers can recognizes different chord sounds and make deliberate use of intervals in a song.

 

 

 

  • You’ll Have to Swing It - The Art of Swing - Mandy Gaines

Swinging a tune is a technique you learn to feel and translate through phrasing and rhythms. In jazz, you must know how to swing! In this session, Mandy Gaines demonstrates the art of jazz swing.

 

 

 

 

  • Practical Application - Participants

Workshop participants and will have  many opportunities to sing with the Thomas Hughes trio during each session. Singers are encouraged to bring lead sheets for piano, bass and drums accompaniment.

These outstanding professional jazz musicians will accompany vocalists during the workshop sessions. They will also answer questions from vocalists from a musician’s perspective. The band is an invaluable learning resource for singers. This is your chance to ask any questions about what they don’t teach you in school!

This workshop will provide a rare opportunity vocalists of all ages should not pass up. Limited Seats are available... but hurry!
